Unused Medication Deactivators
What is it?
Typically a container or pouch containing chemicals that can deactivate unused prescription medications, preventing them from being obtained and misused.
How does it work?
Unused medication is either placed into a pouch or a packet is added to your pill bottle. The pouch or bottle is then filled with warm water and shaken. Finally, the pouch or bottle should be re-sealed and disposed of in normal trash. The McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition has invested in Dispose Rx ( DisposeRx® — Solving the Problem of Drug Disposal) as their preferred method for medication deactivation.
How do I get it?
Dispose Rx can be purchased at most large pharmacy chains when you fill your prescriptions. You can also contact the McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition at 815-334-4048.
